The Primordial Patterns of Percussion

The problem with learning rudiments…what they are missing.

The yin and yang of drumming.

Learn the PRIMORDIAL PATTERNS and take your drumming to the next level

Do you want to break away from being stuck in the same boring linear drum grooves and really explore the universal possibilities of rhythm freely?

To reach a state where each hand and foot seemingly has its own brain and can play patterns independently of the other limbs?

I have discovered a series of hand patterns, which allow drummers to explore the pantheon of universal rhythms in a way that is extremely musical. These patterns align themselves with rhythms from around the world, and universal rhythms in all music, no matter what culture or period they are from.

I call them the “Primordial Patterns”

These patterns work amazingly well on drum set since each one has a built in kick drum and a backbeat for the snare.

Think of a paradiddle, a pattern of drum strokes that goes like this:

Right, Left, Right, Right, Left, Right, Left, Left

My patterns are very similar to this, except there is an important variable left out of the paradiddle.

____________________________________

This one variable, that's missing from the paradiddle, is not found in any of the 40 standardized drum rudiments.

My system of patterns is founded on moving just one variable to different positions in the bar. This one variable is something drummers do all the time in their playing, however not a single one of the 40 rudiments incorporates this variable in their patterns of right and left drum strokes.

What is this variable?

The rudiments (since they are written for snare drum), only have one stick play at any particular time. A particular place in the measure is taken up by either a Left or a Right stroke, and that's fine for snare drum, but when we are talking about drum set, or percussion, there is a missing variable.

The Primordial Patterns of Percussion

An incredibly useful tool I have stumbled upon in my drumming career.
I call them the Primordial Patterns of Percussion. I have assembled the theory into an Ebook which is now available.
See examples of the use of these patterns below and for more, see the youtube channel @primordialpatterns
